Jadavpur vs the Field: How JU Closing Ranks Compare to Every Other WB College, 2024–2026
2026-07-20
Ask any WBJEE aspirant to name the seat everyone wants and the answer is one word: Jadavpur. But how big is the gap between JU and everything else, really? We computed OPEN-category closing ranks under the home-state (HS) quota from the official allotment data for 2024, 2025 and 2026, and compared Jadavpur University against every other institute counselled through WBJEE with published HS OPEN closes (a field of government and state-university seats — Calcutta University, Kalyani GEC, Jalpaiguri GEC and others).
JU's flagship branches, 2024–2026 (HS quota, OPEN closing rank)
| Branch at JU | 2024 | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Science & Engineering | 309 | 238 | 108 |
| Information Technology | 445 | 469 | 243 |
| Electrical Engineering | 788 | 823 | 507 |
| Mechanical Engineering | 1,032 | 1,185 | 725 |
| Civil Engineering | 1,855 | 2,537 | 1,570 |
Every flagship branch closed at its tightest rank of the three years in 2026. JU CSE at 108 means barely a hundred home-state ranks stood between the topper and a closed seat.
JU vs the best of the rest, 2026
| Branch | JU closes at | Best non-JU close (college) |
|---|---|---|
| CSE | 108 | 816 (University of Calcutta) |
| IT | 243 | 1,326 (University of Calcutta) |
| Electrical | 507 | 1,690 (University of Calcutta) |
| Mechanical | 725 | 3,176 (Kalyani Govt. Engineering College) |
| Civil | 1,570 | 4,211 (Jalpaiguri Govt. Engineering College) |
The pattern is stark: in every core branch, the best non-JU college closes 3x to 7x looser than Jadavpur. Calcutta University is consistently the runner-up in circuit branches; Kalyani and Jalpaiguri lead the rest in core branches.
The field-level view
| Year | JU median close (all branches) | Non-JU median close | JU best | Non-JU best |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 1,405 | 5,601 | 309 | 1,641 |
| 2025 | 1,799 | 9,351 | 238 | 1,499 |
| 2026 | 1,026 | 4,551 | 108 | 816 |
Two things stand out. First, the JU premium is stable: its median branch closes roughly 4–5x tighter than the median seat elsewhere, in all three years. Second, JU's "worst" is competitive with others' best — even Architectural Engineering, JU's loosest close in 2026 (7,634), sits within range of mid-table branches at other government colleges.
What this means for your choice filling
- Rank under ~1,100 (OPEN, HS): essentially every JU engineering branch except Civil and Architecture was reachable in 2026. Order JU branches by your interest, not by cutoff fear.
- Rank 1,100–4,500: JU Civil (1,570) and lower-demand JU branches remain live, and you dominate the field elsewhere — CU, Kalyani, Jalpaiguri circuit branches are all inside this band.
- Beyond ~4,500: the JU door is effectively shut in the OPEN HS list, but half the non-JU government field closes past this point, so strong options remain.
One caution: 2026 closes were tighter than 2025 nearly everywhere in this dataset, so do not treat last year's looser numbers as your safety margin.
