Opening vs Closing: Which WBJEE Colleges Filled the Widest Rank Ranges in 2024

A cutoff tells you the last rank admitted. The opening rank tells you the first. The gap between them — the rank spread — is one of the most underused signals in counselling: a narrow spread means a seat is contested by a thin, consistent band of candidates; a huge spread means the college admits everyone from toppers' backups to the tail of the merit list. We computed opening-to-closing spreads for every OPEN-category row in the 2024 WBJEE allotment data (545 rows with both ranks published).
The headline: quota determines the spread

*JEE(Main) seat spreads are on the national JEE Main rank scale, so they are not directly comparable to WBJEE-rank rows — but a seat that opens at rank 2.8 lakh and closes past 13.5 lakh tells its own story about demand.
Home-state seats at government institutions fill inside tight, sub-thousand windows. The all-India WBJEE-rank pool at private colleges is a different world: the median seat there spans nearly 14,000 ranks.
The widest WBJEE-rank windows of 2024

Notice the pattern: seven of the eight widest windows are CSE/ECE seats at private colleges, opening around rank 3,500–17,500 and closing past the lakh mark. Someone with rank 3,523 and someone with rank 106,981 sat in the same classroom.
And the narrowest
At the other extreme, the most selective seats barely have a window at all. Jadavpur University's IT seat under the all-India WBJEE quota opened and closed at rank 197 — a spread of zero, typical of single-seat or near-single-seat quotas. JU's home-state CSE seat ran just 160 → 309. Across all of JU's WBJEE-rank rows, the widest spread anywhere was 3,742 (Architectural Engineering).
How to actually use spreads
- Wide spread = late-round opportunity. If a college-branch admitted a 100,000-wide band in 2024, a mid-list rank should not be scared off by its opening rank — the seat demonstrably fills deep.
- Narrow spread = no upgrade luck. A 300-rank window at JU or Calcutta University means waiting for withdrawal rounds rarely helps; you either make the band or you don't.
- Opening ranks are marketing; closing ranks are reality. A private college opening at 3,500 sounds elite, but the 106,981 close is the number that describes the incoming class.
